Fall 2021 Book Club Registration: Two Opportunities

This fall, Women in the Academy and Professions are offering two online opportunities to read a good book and discuss it with graduate student, faculty, and professional women.

September-October 2021
Sarah’s Laughter: Doubt, Tears and Christian Hope
by Vinoth Ramachandra

How do we make sense of the suffering in our world and in our lives? Is there a place for doubt and questioning? What does living with hope look like? If you are a faculty member, graduate student, or professional who would love to engage with women colleagues on these topics (and more) in these ongoing uncertain times, we invite you to join our Fall Book Club discussing Vinoth Ramachandra’s Sarah’s Laughter: Doubt, Tears and Christian Hope.

Thursdays at 9:00 pm Eastern on Zoom — September 30, October 7, and October 14
hosted by Jasmine Obeyesekere

Vinoth Ramachandra confronts the intellectual, moral and political challenges posed to faith in our increasingly broken world. He reminds us that lament and joy, faith and protest, clarity, and ambiguity belong together in faithful Christian discipleship.
Vinoth holds a PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the University of London and is a Sri Lanka based lay theologian, writer, teacher and human rights advocate. He is a senior leader with IFES, a global partnership of over 150 university-level Christian movements

November 2021
Power Women: Stories of Motherhood, Faith, and the Academy
Edited by Nancy Wang Yuen and Deshonna Collier-Goubil

Two challenging vocations, each filled with complexities and daily ups and downs. Yet more and more women are answering the call to both the academy and motherhood. A growing body of literature addresses parent-professors, but what about the particular needs of Christian women seeking to navigate both callings while living out their faith?

With Power Women, Nancy Wang Yuen and Deshonna Collier-Goubil have curated a unique resource by and for Christian academic mothers. This collection of essays includes the voices of women of different backgrounds, academic disciplines, institutions, and stages of parenting and career. Together contributors provide wisdom, encouragement, and solidarity for women who share a similar vocational journey.

Mondays at 9:00 pm Eastern on Zoom — November 1, 8, and 15
hosted by Karen Guzmàn
