God Holds My Hand
So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
For I am the LORD, your God,
Who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, Do not fear,
I will help you.
so that people may see and know,
may consider and understand,
that the hand of the LORD has done this.

Picture the different ways people use their hands to help someone who is afraid: an arm around the shoulder, two hands holding another’s hands firmly and compassionately, a hand outstretched to grasp the other’s hand or shoulder, an open hand offering needed food or money, a hand leading another through darkness or danger, arms sweeping underneath someone to lift them up and carry them to safety, hands clapping to warn of danger, hands folded in prayer for another, hands on a head seeking God’s blessing and anointing, a hand writing a note of encouragement. Hands are wonderful tools for dispelling fear!
How does Isaiah use the image of a hand to describe God’s deep care for us?
Think of a situation today when you might need (or have already needed) God’s hand to stay your fear. Imagine how God’s hand might touch you today.
Think of someone you know whose heart is fearful. How can you reach out your hand to them today?
Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, help me stand;
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Thru the storm, thru the night,
Lead me on to the light.
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
